As mentioned in my previous post about the Half My Heart Beats summer of pop, our next gig will be something a bit different. American folk troubadour Morgan Orion will be joined by one of our absolute favourite bands The Middle Ones at The 78 on Monday 31st May at 2pm.
Morgan Orion plays mellow and beautiful acoustic folk songs influenced by the likes of Withered Hand, Herman Dune and Jeffrey Lewis. According to his record label, Morgan "likes to dance and talk about dreams in the morning. He sings songs with trails of words and they flutter like butterflies out of his mouth. He wears brown corduroys a lot and travels the land with a guitar in his hand."
Sounds good to us! If you're still not convinced, watch this great video for his song, 'Let Me Inside When I Knock On Your Door'.
The Middle Ones headlined our first ever popshow back in December 2008 and they're coming all the way from Norwich for one day only, just for this show! They play the most glorious, disarming folk-tinged pop songs you could wish to hear and you really, really should come out to see them if you can.
Entrance is free but we'll be asking for donations to help the bands cover their costs. Hope you can make it! Links to the Facebook and last.fm pages are in the sidebar.

The next Half My Heart Beats, as you'll see, is less than a week away - Saturday 12th September, to be exact, which is nearly a year to the day since the very first.

You may have seen some of Andy's artwork before, most notably on the cover of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's sought-after single Kurt Cobain's Cardigan and on Pete Green's latest EP, Platform Zero.
Just a quick post to show you this brilliant flyer that a fella by the name of Indiehorse has designed for our March popshow. You can see more of Mr. Horse's work on his website, the aptly-titled indiehorse.com.
As promised, here's another video of one of the bands we've got playing at Half My Heart Beats a week tomorrow (Saturday 10th). This time it's The Hermit Crabs being proper popstars in that America, set to Feel Good Factor, a song from their first album (which was called Saw You Dancing).

Just a quick post to show you the flyer for our December popshow at The Twisted Wheel, which we're starting to get really excited about. If you're at gigs around Glasgow in the coming month, expect to see me shivering outside handing these out afterwards.
We're still trying to finalise the support bands for The Ballet on 10th January, but as soon as it's all confirmed we'll let you know. I think that regardless of which other bands we manage to get, seeing The Ballet will be one of my highlights of 2009, even if it is only ten days in.

The runup to our next night has well and truly started with the delivery of these babies... we've got another box full in addition to what you see there too. Sorry for the lack of posts in the last week or so. We've just been catching up on all the other stuff that's been ignored while we've been plotting and scheming for the first night! Well, as you can see we've got a new flyer design, courtesy of David Smitten of The Smittens. How great is it that instead of trying to sue us for nicking their song title for the name of our club, they offer to design our flyers? If you want to see more of David's work, have a look at this. Plans are steadily taking shape for the second Half My Heart Beats, which will take place on Saturday 11th October. After much consideration, we've decided to move to the main room at The Flying Duck to give you all a bit more space, particularly for dancing! Lynsey and I both love the kitchen, but I think most people who were at the first club night would agree that we could use a bit more space, hence the move. We're also hoping to have a free gift for the next club night, but I better not say what it is until they've arrived, as they're currently on their way from Florida. All will become clear! If we can't manage it for next time, we'll definitely have them for the November club. As ever, keep checking back or subscribe to the RSS feed to keep up to date with all the club news. Just thought I'd do a quick post to let you know how things are coming along for the first night. Well, I'm glad to say that I picked up our posters from the print shop this afternoon. I'll be photocopying our DIY flyers tomorrow after work, and tomorrow night will be spent cutting them into neat rectangles. I know how to spend my Friday nights. Lynsey has been away in Wales being a rock teacher (the stone kind, not the music kind) so I've been scrabbling around at work all week, abusing the printing facilites. In case my boss is reading this, I jest. I'm starting to get excited about our first night, with it being only a week and two days away. Neither of us have done anything like this before, so I think we're trying to be ultra-prepared and have each got our own provisional playlists drawn up, on spreadsheets no less. If you get the impression this is kind of an amateurish enterprise, you'd be right. We're just feeling our way at the moment. I don't think either Lynsey or I ever really expected to be putting on our own club night, so it's a bit of a dream come true. We both really want the nights to have a welcoming atmosphere. This is not the kind of club where you have to look a certain way or whatever, we hope none of that comes into it. Can I post videos here? I don't see why not. I just found this video of The Middle Ones, whom I've been talking up to anyone who'd listen since I saw them at Indietracks earlier in the summer.
As you can see, we've got a design for the flyers and posters we're going to be printing for the first night. Hopefully you'll be seeing a lot of these around Glasgow in the next couple of weeks.
Half My Heart Beats is a monthly indiepop, girl group and anti-folk night at The 78, a pub in Glasgow's west end. It takes place on the fourth Saturday of every month from 9pm until midnight and is free.
We also play records at the odd one-off event, when people ask us.
